A Fun Addition or Subtraction Math Game

My Students Playing the Game

We played a fun addition and subtraction game in our class this week.  First, print out the pdf below and cut out the numbers.  Give one number to each student.  You can also cut index cards in half and make up your own numbers to use.

Using a blank sheet of computer paper, have your students either make a tic tac toe board (very large) or fold their paper to make nine separate sections on the page.

The students find a partner, use each of their numbers to write a problem in one of the sections on their paper.  They both solve the problem.  If they have the same sum or difference, they find another available partner and start a new problem.  If they have a different sum or difference, they work out the problem together and try to find out why the problem is incorrect.  Then, they move on to another partner and repeat.

Have the students fill in all nine squares, or even more on the back.  The students get to move around, discuss, and work together to find solutions.  It is a great way to reinforce those addition and subtraction skills you have been working on.
